Shawn Mathey to sing in Toledo Opera's 'Butterfly' in fall

TOLEDO - Bowling Green native Shawn Mathey will return to area when Toledo Opera Giacomo  Puccini's "Madama Butterfly," Oct. 2 and 4.

The production, which will star soprano Yunah Lee in her signature role of Cio-Cio San, will open the company's 2015-2016 season.

Mathey will play Pinkerton in a production conducted by Sara Jobin and directed by Chautauqua Opera's Jay Lesenger.

The season will also include a concert version with digital projections to set the scene of the Gershwin opera "Porgy and Bess,"Feb. 12 and 14 conducted by James Meena. The all-African American cast of 13 will be backed by a chorus with members drawn from the Opera's chorus and area choruses.

Bess will be sung by Laquita Mitchell and Gordon Hawkins, who will play Porgy.  

The opera's season will conclude with Gounod's opera "Roméo et Juliette" in a lavish

production created in partnership with both Opera Carolina and Virginia Opera, April 8 and 10. The production, directed by Bernard Uzan and conducted by James Meena, marks the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare's death.

Canadian soprano Marie Eve Munger and tenor Jonathan Boyd will sing the title roles.

The performances are staged in the Valentine Theatre and feature the Toledo Symphony Orchestra.
