Toledo Opera Goes for Laughs

Toledo, OH – Toledo Opera‘s season will begin with performances of Rossini’s comic masterpiece The Barber of Seville at the Valentine Theatre on October 7, at 7:30pm, and October 9 at 2pm. Setting the first of the French playwright Beaumarchais’ three “Figaro” plays, The Barber of Seville will be followed, in February, by Mozart’s charming masterpiece The Marriage of Figaro, which sets the second installment of the trilogy.

Toledo, OH, April 27, 2015—Toledo Opera will open its 2015-2016 season with performances of Puccini’s beloved opera Madama Butterfly on October 2 and 4, 2015. Conducted by Sara Jobin, with stage direction by Chautauqua Opera’s General/Artistic Director Jay Lesenger, the cast will include tenor Shawn Mathey, a Bowling Green Native, as Pinkerton and soprano Yunah Lee in her signature role of Cio-Cio San. Continuing Toledo Opera’s series of American operas, the second production of the season will be The Gershwins’ Porgy & Bess performed in concert version on February 12 and 14, 2016. This timeless classic will have an all-African-American cast of thirteen artists performing on the stage of the Valentine Theatre with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra conducted by James Meena, and a chorus with members drawn from the Opera’s chorus and other choruses in Toledo. Digital projections will be created especially for the production to express Catfish Row and Kitiwah Island. Bess will be sung by Laquita Mitchell, who, since her debut in the role at San Francisco Opera in 2009, has taken it to audiences around the world. Gordon Hawkins, who will play Porgy, is a leading interpreter of the role in the United States and Europe.

Toledo Opera Returns to its Origins with AIDA

Toledo, OH - August 29, 2013 -- On Friday, October 4th at 7:30pm and Sunday, October 6th at 2:00pm, Toledo Opera will begin its 2013-2014 season with Giuseppe Verdi’s grand opera Aida at the Valentine Theatre. With its challenging roles, large orchestral and choral forces, massive scenery, and lush costumes, successfully producing Aida is a major achievement for any opera company. Significantly, it was the first opera ever produced in Toledo, in 1959, and launched both the Toledo Opera Guild and what would become today’s Toledo Opera.

Toledo Opera 2013 Opera Gala Concert

TOLEDO, OH March 18, 2013 Toledo Opera’s 2012-2013 Season continues on April 12 at 8 pm and April 14 at 2 pm, 2013 with its annual Opera Gala Concert, performed for the first time at the Valentine Theatre. The Gala features five nationally and internationally acclaimed singers who make their homes in or near Toledo. Sara Jobin, Assistant Conductor of San Francisco Opera and Toledo Opera’s first female conductor, will conduct the Toledo Symphony Orchestra and the Toledo Opera Chorus in a program of opera favorites, including Verdi’s “La donna e mobile” from Rigoletto and lesser-known gems such as Dvorak’s “Song to the Moon” from Rusalka. She and Kevin Bylsma, Head of Music Preparation for Toledo Opera, will provide a narrative tying the program’s wonderful and varied numbers together. Prior to the performances, there will be two events benefiting Toledo Opera: a Jazz Dinner ($100 per guest) at 6:00 pm in the Valentine Theatre’s Grand Lobby on April 12th and a Champagne Brunch ($75 per guest) at 12:00 pm, also in the Valentine’s Grand Lobby, on April 14th. One of the Greatest Operas Ever Written

TOLEDO, OH January 22, 2013 Toledo Opera’s 2012-2013 Season continues on February 15 at 8 pm and February 17 at 2 pm, 2013 with Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the Valentine Theatre. In the opera, first performed in 1787, Mozart transforms the legendary womanizer Don Juan into a complex character of mythical status, capable of capturing the interest of audiences up to current times. Toledo Opera’s production of Don Giovanni sets the classic story in the 1950s, providing a visually compelling new look at the opera. The production will be conducted by Stefan Sanderling, returning to the podium after conducting the Opera Gala and Turandot in 2012, and will be directed by Brian Deedrick, making his Toledo Opera debut.

Toledo Opera Receives NEA Grant to Support Don Giovanni

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Chairman Rocco Landesman announced today that Toledo Opera is one of 832 non-profit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant.
