Toledo Opera concludes its 50th
Anniversary Celebratory Season with Leonard Bernstein’s Candide on
May 2, 2009 at 7:30pm at the Toledo Museum of Art, Peristyle.
Adapted from Voltaire’s masterpiece, Candide is
a classic coming-of-age story about a young man’s journey
from innocence to experience. The hopelessly optimistic Candide
is determined to follow his instructor’s creed of mindless
idealism. After being banished, abused and torn repeatedly
from the woman he loves, Candide still perseveres, fortified
and inspired by the philosophy that everything is for the
best. Candide’s trials are seen through a lens that
shimmers with comedy, sexiness and fun. Voltaire’s
classic tale is enlivened by Leonard Bernstein’s legendary
score. Lush and elegant, it urges the audience to do what
a satire hopes the audience will do, in the face of all that
is wrong with the world, struggle to make it “the best
of all possible worlds.”
Bernstein is arguably the finest and most
famous American-born conductor and composer of the twentieth
century. His effervescent score will be brought to life by
an all-star ensemble of singers. Tying it together will be
actor Richard Kind as the narrator. Known for his affable
and versatile performances in the television series Mad
About You, Scrubs, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Law and Order, Criminal
Intent and Spin
City. On Broadway, Kind created the role of
Addison Mizner in Stephen Sondheim’s Bounce, and
has appeared on Broadway in The Tale of the
Allergist’s Wife, The Producers and Sly
Fox. He was personally selected by actor/director George
Clooney to star in his directorial debut Confessions
of a Dangerous Mind. His voice-over credits include
Larry the Anaconda in The Wild, Clark in the Clark & Lewis
Expedition, Molt in Disney/Pixar’s A Bug's
Life, Van in Disney/Pixar’s Cars, the
narrator for Disney’s Go Baby and Tom (Jasper)
the cat’s voice in Tom and Jerry.
Candide will be staged
by Marc Verzatt and directed by Grammy award-winning conductor
Thomas Conlin. General Director Renay Conlin says “you
can expect the unexpected at this amazing evening of musical
theater.”
