Toledo Opera Announces 2006-2007 Season

Renay Conlin, Toledo Opera’s General and Artistic Director, announced that the company’s 2006-2007 Season will open with Romeo and Juliet on October 7, 13, 15, 2006. Based upon William Shakespeare's famous play about two star-crossed lovers in 13th century Verona, Charles Gounod's enchanting score dazzles us with dramatic choruses and an exquisite flood of sublime love duets. Romeo, son of the Montague family, falls in love with Juliet, daughter of the Capulets. But these rich and powerful families are deadly enemies, and before long, tragedy strikes.

November 17, 18, 19, 2006 will bring Gaetano Donizetti’s effervescent opera buffa Don Pasquale. A brilliant mix of comedy and romance, Don Pasquale involves one of the most amusing deceptions in opera. Disapproving of Ernesto’s love for Norina, the old bachelor Don Pasquale disinherits his poor nephew. Now that Pasquale has no heir, the quick thinking Dr. Malatesta arranges for his “sister” Sofronia to be Pasquale’s young bride. Who is she really and why is she so crafty? Mischief and merriment abound as the plot unravels and love prevails.

One of Toledo’s most anticipated musical events, Opera Gala 2007 will take place on February 10. This year’s theme is From Russia With Love, a choral and orchestral spectacular plus noted soloists – all the pomp, power and pageantry of Imperial Russia. The company will close its season on April 28, May 4, 6, 2007 with Puccini’s Tosca. Cherished not only for its heart-wrenching melodies, but regarded as a dramatic masterpiece, Tosca is full of passion and intrigue as the tension between love and betrayal ultimately clash in Puccini’s thriller. Hailed as his greatest creative accomplishment, Tosca tells of the beautiful opera singer, Floria Tosca, who finds herself torn between the painter she loves and the loathsome chief of police who holds her lover’s fate in his hands. Filled with treachery, murder and unbreakable love, the opera captures the events of a single fateful day amid the political turmoil of 19th-century Rome.

“Thousands of people have discovered the compelling combination of live music and great drama that is opera”, said Conlin. “Our season will stimulate your mind, move you emotionally and offer you an experience that is unique and exciting.”
