Star athlete Mac rules his school and has his mind set on becoming Prom King. In order to gain the crown, he decides to pass off his "ordinary" girlfriend to his friend Lenny, who plays in the marching band, and find a more suitable girl to be his queen. He decides on Isabella, the beautiful and mysterious exchange student who just arrived from Italy. Wooing Isabella proves far more difficult than Mac bargained for, and the result is a charming and humorous adventure, ending with the age-old moral that "it's what's on the inside that counts." Rossini’s music enhances the humor as he introduces crescendos, patter sequences (sung at breakneck speed) and coloratura passages, all in the service of comic effect.
Toledo Opera brings to your school everything that is necessary for the production, including four vocal artists, a collaborative pianist, a piano, scenery and costumes. You only need to provide a space-we love to perform in gymnasiums! For many K-8 students, this is a first step toward developing a life-long love for opera and theater performed live. Students’ rapt attention during performances shows that they are amazed by all that is happening; they are caught up in the story and in awe of the talent, both singing and acting, that the artists display. The word, awesome, appears frequently in young students’ responses to an Opera on Wheels performance. To learn more about our talented 2013 Artists in Residence, please click here.
