education + outreach 2012 Artists in Residence
Each year in the spring, Toledo Opera's Artists in Residence perform a touring version of an opera in elementary schools throughout northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan. This year they are performing Wagner's The Ring adapted by Artistic Director for Opera on Wheels, Jennifer Cresswell.
Soprano Danielle Messina recently completed her Master of Music at Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music, where she appeared in Poulenc's Dialogues of the Carmelites and Monteverdi's Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda. As an Apprentice Artist at Saratoga Opera in 2011, she sang the role of Lucy in Menotti's The Telephone and was understudy for the role of Despina in Mozart's Così fan tutte. She is also a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, where she played Rose in Weill's Street Scene, Poppea in Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea and the Foreign Woman in Menotti's The Consul. Ms. Messina won 2nd Place in the National Orpheus Vocal Competition in 2011.
Tenor Jason Wickson has participated in the resident artist programs of Santa Fe Opera, Palm Beach Opera and, most recently, Michigan Opera Theatre. He sang the title role in Britten's Albert Herring in Palm Beach Opera's resident artist production. With Michigan Opera Theatre, he performed the roles of First Armed Man in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte and Borsa in Verdi's Rigoletto, and was featured as the Tenor Soloist/Swan in a staged production of Orff's Carmina Burana. Equally comfortable on the concert stage, Mr. Wickson has been Tenor Soloist in Verdi's Requiem, Beethoven's 9th Symphony, Handel's Messiah and Puccini's Messa di Gloria. He is a graduate of Oakland University and Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music.
Bass Timothy J. Bruno has appeared as Timur in Turandot, Antonio in Le Nozze di Figaro, Frère Laurent in Roméo et Juliette, Balthazar in Amahl and the Night Visitors and Superintendent Budd in Albert Herring. He has also been a featured soloist in concert works with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, the Moravian Symphony Orchestra, Dayton Bach Society, the Toledo Symphony Orchestra (strings), and the Bowling Green Philharmonia. As a Young Artist at Cincinnati Opera in 2011, he performed in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte and Verdi's Rigoletto, and he understudied for roles in Adams' A Flowering Tree and Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin. Mr. Bruno is a graduate of Bowling Green State University and Cincinatti's College-Conservatory of Music.
Baritone Errin Brooks expects to complete his Master of Music at Bowling Green State University (BGSU) in spring 2011. He was an audience favorite in the role of Count Almaviva in BGSU Opera Theater's fall production of Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro. With BGSU's Opera Theater, he also sang the roles of Belcore in Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore and Colonel Calverly in Gilbert and Sullivan's Patience. Since 2008, Mr. Brooks has sung with Michigan Opera Theatre's Chorus and he recently played the role of the Court Usher in its production of Verdi's Rigoletto. From 2009-2011, he has had a graduate student assistantship at BGSU and was the 2010 winner of the Dr. Marjorie Conrad Art Song Competition.
