How will I understand if the production is in another language?
Many operas are sung in languages other than English (Italian, French, German, and more). But don’t let that stop you from experiencing opera! Every mainstage production (even ones sung in English) has English supertitles or captions. These are very similar to subtitles you see on TV shows and movies. Want to be prepared before you even step foot in the theatre? Check out our show pages to read a full synopsis and to access our audience guides. Arrive early to the performance and catch our complimentary Pre-Opera Talk!
When do I applaud during an opera?
Our performers love to hear your applause! If you are ever unsure of when to applaud, take cues from your fellow audience members. Want to feel like a true opera extraordinaire? Add a “Bravo” (or “Brava” for female leads) during the cast’s bows. This is opera for “well done!”
What should I wear to the opera?
There is no dress code for Toledo Opera! Some audience members choose to dress for a special occasion, while others prefer to keep it casual. We encourage our audience members to wear whatever they are comfortable.
Can I take pictures at the opera?
Photography and video/audio recordings are prohibited during a Toledo Opera performance. However, you are more than welcome to take pictures before the show, after the show, and during intermission! There are amazing photo opportunities in nearly every corner of the historic Valentine Theatre. Posting on social media? Tag Toledo Opera! We love to see our audience members having fun at the opera.

How will I know what to do when I arrive?
For every performance, Toledo Opera sends you a “Know Before You Go” email. This email includes all of the key information you will need to know before coming to the theatre.
When should I arrive to the opera?
Plan to arrive about 30-40 minutes early. This gives you plenty of time to park, get your tickets from Will Call if needed, and find your seats in the theatre without feeling rushed. Latecomers are seated in the rear of the theatre until ushers take them to their seats at an appropriate time in the production which may be the first intermission.
What if I have a question at the theatre?
Have a question about the performance, need a recommendation on where to eat, or even directions to the restroom or coat check? Toledo Opera team members can be found in the historic lobby of the Valentine Theatre at the Patron Services Table. Visit us to chat, or to learn more about Toledo Opera’s programming. Valentine Theatre staff and volunteers are also available throughout the theatre to assist with any of your needs!
