Join us before the performance for a lively and engaging pre-opera talk with musicologist Dr. Eftychia Papanikolaou. Dr. Papanikolaou will guide you through the drama, history, and music of Aida, offering fresh insights that will enrich your experience of Bizet’s masterpiece. Whether you’re a first-time operagoer or a seasoned fan, his fascinating perspective will deepen your connection to the story and the score.

Effie Papanikolaou holds a B.A. in English Philology and Literature from the University of Athens, Greece, Music Theory Degrees from the National Conservatory of Athens, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Historical Musicology from Boston University. Her scholarship explores the intersections of music, religion, and politics, with publications spanning composers from Haydn and Spontini to Liszt and Mahler. A dedicated public musicologist, Papanikolaou has presented hundreds of program notes and pre-concert lectures for professional ensembles and concert events. She has presented Toledo Opera’s pre-performance talks since 2015 and has also appeared as a lecturer at the Toledo Museum of Art and on WGTE’s SymphonyLab. She serves as Musicology Area Coordinator at Bowling Green State University’s College of Musical Arts, where she teaches and researches music history and culture. For Aida, Papanikolaou will provide the pre-opera talk, offering context and insight into Verdi’s iconic work.
