Toledo Opera is deeply saddened by the loss of Sandra (“Sandy”) Ruth Honeman, a cherished member of our Opera family, who passed away on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at the age of 87.
Sandy was a dedicated supporter of the arts and a passionate advocate for music education. Her love for opera brought her to the Toledo Opera Chorus, where she was an active participant and enthusiastic member of the Toledo Opera Guild. Sandy’s involvement with Toledo Opera spanned decades, and she remained a vibrant part of our community well into her later years.
Beyond her participation in our Chorus, Sandy made a lasting impact through her establishment of an annual Opera Cadre, a program that provides local students the opportunity to experience the magic of live opera at no cost. Her commitment to nurturing young minds and fostering a love for the arts will leave an enduring legacy in the lives of countless students.
Sandy’s contribution to the arts extended beyond Toledo Opera. She was a lifelong educator, teaching history, English, and government for over 30 years. Her year as a Fulbright Scholar in Prague, where she taught English, exemplifies her dedication to learning and her adventurous spirit.
In addition to her involvement with Toledo Opera, Sandy’s love for music led her to perform with the Henry County Chorale and in her church choir. Her strong devotion to music was a source of adamant joy, and she generously shared that joy with those around her.
Sandy’s warmth, generosity, and unwavering commitment to the arts and education touched the lives of many. She was not only a beloved member of our Toledo Opera family, but also a steadfast friend and mentor to those who had the privilege of knowing her. Toledo Opera expresses its deepest condolences to Sandy’s family and loved ones. Her presence will be profoundly missed, but her legacy will continue to inspire us all.
