Toledo Opera and Toledo Museum of Art will host two free LocalEyes tours on Saturday, October 4, 2025 at 1:30 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. at the Toledo Museum of Art (2445 Monroe Street, Toledo, OH 43620). These tours are free and open to adult audiences. Registration is required.
Inspired by Toledo Opera’s upcoming production of Carmen, this tour invites Toledoans to share the works of art in TMA’s collection that have inspired them. This unique experience allows artists, professors, musicians, and other community members to share with the public the museum’s impact on them. Each LocalEyes tour pairs a TMA Docent with a featured guest, who co-curates the tour, offering personal insights and stories behind the works that resonate with them.
This event invites the community to join Dr. Eftychia Papanikolaou, Associate Professor of Musicology at Bowling Green State University and lecturer for Toledo Opera, on a tour through the galleries as they discuss artwork in the museum’s collection that has particular associations with Carmen by Georges Bizet. Whether focusing on themes of love, conflict, fate, independence, or character archetypes, this tour provides a versatile lens for interpreting artworks across different periods and media. Registration for both tours is available by visiting: www.toledomuseum.org/carmen.
“Building on the passion and drama of Toledo Opera’s Carmen, the LocalEyes tour invites our community to share the artwork that has deeply inspired them,” shared Toledo Opera General Director James M. Norman. “This unique collaboration between TMA and Toledo Opera offers an intimate glimpse into the emotional power and history behind the pieces. It’s an opportunity for Toledoans to connect with art in a new way – through the voices and experiences of their neighbors.”
About Carmen: Bizet’s sizzling epic of dark passion, Carmen, tells the story of a fierce woman who lives life on her own terms – and the men who can’t let her go. Don José, a soldier drawn into her orbit, abandons everything for Carmen’s love, only to find himself consumed by jealousy when her attention shifts to the dashing bullfighter, Escamillo. With its twisting tale of romance, deceit, and disaster set to magnetic melodies, Bizet’s masterpiece, Carmen, has become one of the world’s most popular operas. Featuring some of the most popular music to ever grace the opera stage, Carmen brings every aspect of Bizet’s thrilling tale to life, from its tantalizing beginning to its devastating climax. Under the baton of Adam Turner (Toledo Opera’s Il Trovatore, and Roméo & Juliet), Toledo Opera’s vibrant original production is not to be missed. Carmen stars Lisa Marie Rogali as Carmen, Brendan Boyle (Tosca and Ragtime) as Don José, and Joshua Jeremiah (Ragtime) as Escamillo. Carmen is presented in French with English captions.
