The Toledo Opera is hosting a craft cocktail competition inspired by its upcoming production, The Elixir of Love, the organization said in a press release.
"Top Shelf: A Cocktail Competition of Operatic Proportions" features - of course - cocktails, but also includes mocktails, food and a complimentary wine bar. Being the Toledo Opera, there is, naturally, also a musical element: a performance by a cast member previewing the upcoming production.
The inaugural event will be held at Registry Bistro Ballroom (144 N. Superior St. in Toledo) on Feb. 6 at 7 p.m.
The event is also a competition, with celebrity mixologists competing to see who can craft the most crowd-pleasing cocktail of the evening. Among the celebrity mixologists is WTOL 11's own Dan Cummins. We asked Dan what his favorite cocktails were, and he said either a chocolate martini or a Georgia peach Long Island.
Other judges include the following:
The Elixir of Love's conductor, J. Ernest Green, and tenor David Walton, will also participate in the mixology competition. Attendees will vote for the best cocktail with tips and whichever mixologist receives the most tips will take home the "Top Shelf Trophy." The Audience Development Committee, which is a newly-formed group within the Toledo Opera, added: “We designed Top Shelf to be a joyful, high-energy night out full of great music, great drinks, and plenty of personality. It’s playful and welcoming, and it invites people to experience opera in a fun, unexpected way right here in Toledo.”
Tickets are $60 and include food, mocktails and four cocktails. Reservations are required. Click here for more information.
The Feb. 13 and 15 performances of The Elixir of Love will be the first time the Toledo Opera has presented it since 1985.
