The Toledo Opera reaches over 18,000 students who may otherwise never have an opportunity to see the opera.

Q: What’s better than going to the opera?

A: Having the opera come to you.

That’s exactly what the Toledo Opera’s award-winning program, Opera on Wheels, has been doing for school kids and members of the general public for 40 years.

Every year, Opera on Wheels, presents a new production, which they take out into the community to perform at schools, churches, libraries, and Metroparks.

This year’s production was The Bear Who Couldn’t Fish, a story about a bear who gets help from his animal friends as he struggles to remember how to fish. The age-appropriate story, set in the Great Lakes ecosystem, blends humor, heart and concern for the environment.

The company put on 40 performances of the production, reaching more than 14,000 students, educators and members of the general public who may have never had an opportunity to experience the opera.

“…[The Toledo Opera] performers have always been so kind and patient with our children, and it has been such a joy to watch their faces and reactions during the programs,” said Kimberly Canfield, Music Teacher at Harvard Elementary School and Chair of the Toledo Public Schools Music Program about the production.

In April, the company received a $21,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts that retroactively supported the program for the first five months of the year.

Starting in October, the opera will present an adaptation of the folk tale, The Three Little Pigs. The 45 minute production will include scenes and music from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s operas.
