From pop-up performances with resident artists to fun-filled gatherings at local pubs, Toledo Opera is planning several community events to enhance its 2026-2027 season of fully staged productions of Aida and H.M.S. Pinafore.
“With free performances around the region with Opera ’Round Town to chorus rehearsals for Aida, exciting things are happening both on and off the stage,” said Rachael Cammarn, director of marketing and communication for Toledo Opera.
The epic tale of love, loyalty and impossible choices in Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida will turn the Valentine Theatre in Toledo into an Egyptian royal court this fall, with performances Oct. 16 and 18. Audiences will set sail with Gilbert & Sullivan’s delightful H.M.S. Pinafore in the same historic downtown venue on Feb. 19 and 21.
At the heart of Aida is an Ethiopian princess, captured and enslaved in Egypt, who finds herself caught between two worlds: the man she loves and the homeland and people to whom she belongs.
Love takes a lighter turn in H.M.S. Pinafore, with mischievous sailors, scheming relatives, and bumbling ship passengers mixing up identities and stretching the boundaries of social classes.
The northwest Ohio regional opera company operates as a nonprofit and offers several opportunities for the community to learn more about the story and music of the season’s operas, with free pre-performance lectures at the Valentine and extensive synopses, audience guides, and audio clips on its website at toledoopera.org.
Companion programming throughout the year includes prelude dinners and special events such as Aida: Get into the Spirit, a casual event with signature cocktails and cast performances from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Oct. 1 at Bellwether at Toledo Spirits Co., 1301 N. Summit St. Admission is free with drinks and food available for purchase.
Set throughout the distinctive spaces of TolHouse, the event Aida: Homelands will feature traditional Azmari music, an Ethiopian buffet from Taste of Ethiopia in Detroit, and a presentation by musicologist Dr. Ryan Ebright exploring Ethiopia’s role in the opera and some of the historical and cultural context surrounding Verdi’s iconic work. Tickets are $75 for the event starting at 6 p.m. at the club (1447 N. Summit St.) and must be purchased in advance.
The Toledo Opera Guild, a volunteer group dedicated to spreading awareness of the artform and supporting Toledo Opera, is planning an Aida luncheon Oct. 1 in the Malawi Event Center at Toledo Zoo. Attendees get to meet principal performers and production leaders from the opera as well as opera staff, and they will be serenaded with a special selection from Aida.
The Guild also plans special events throughout the season, including Tip the Opera meals at local restaurants, with the next one slated as a Halloween Booooozy Brunch on Oct. 31. Guild membership is open to the public with three different levels and can be registered on the opera website, which also has details of other Guild events.
Toledo Opera resident artists are the backbone of the company’s melodic and harmonic offerings the whole year, with Opera ’Round Town outdoor performances and Opera Is a Story and Opera on Wheels programs brought to area schools.
Sponsored by iHeart Media Inc. and presented in partnership with Metroparks Toledo, Opera ’Round Town features Jenna Grissom (soprano), Caroline Friend (mezzo soprano), Jeremy Do (tenor), Timothy Krueger (baritone), and Charles Lingus (pianist), who were selected from an international pool of more than 150 applicants for a one-year residency in Toledo. Together, they will perform iconic vocal selections from the classical repertoire, along with musical theater and other American standards.
The first of seven scheduled Opera ’Round Town performances will be held at 6 p.m. on Sept. 9 at The Manor House at Wildwood Metropark, 5100 W. Central Ave.
Student Night at the Opera invites middle and high school students to come to the final dress rehearsal of the main stage productions, at 7 p.m., Oct. 14 for Aida and at 7 p.m., Feb. 17 for H.M.S. Pinafore at the Valentine Theatre. Tickets are $10 per student and teacher. As in the public performances, English captions will be projected for both operas. (Aida is sung in Italian, while H.M.S. Pinafore is sung in English.)
An all-access ticket to the Friday, Oct. 16 performance of Aida will include an Operatizer, a pre-performance gathering starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Toledo Club, and Afterglow, the opening night cast party following the performance. Hosted by the Toledo Opera Audience Development Committee, transportation between the club and theater will be provided. Tickets are $100 per person.
Curtain rises at 7:30 p.m. for the Friday night performances and at 2 p.m. on Sundays for both Aida and H.M.S. Pinafore.
Single-seat opera performance tickets range from $59-$149 while season subscriptions from $99-$349 offer bundled discounts and all-inclusive perks.
