At a party in her Paris salon Violetta meets Alfredo and quickly falls for him. After the lovers run away together, they live in bliss for a very short time. However, Alfredo's father, Giorgio, starts to interfere, concerned that Violetta's bad reputation will affect the marriage prospects of Alfredo's sister. Violetta’s health and declining circumstances make for a typically tragic operatic ending. La traviata stars internationally renowned Metropolitan Opera soprano, Kathryn Lewek as Violetta and Metropolitan Opera tenor Zach Borichevsky as Alfredo. This real-life couple will bring smoldering emotions to one of Verdi’s best scores stage directed by Toledo favorite Marc Verzatt and conducted by Maestro Joseph Colaneri.

Kathryn Lewek

Kathryn Lewek has established herself as one of opera’s most thrilling coloratura sopranos of this generation, performing some of the most vocally challenging roles in the repertoire, joining the top-ranking operatic performers of all time. Following her “especially brilliant” (Bachtrack) début as Ginevra (Ariodante) with the Salzburger Pfingstfestspiele in Austria, opposite Cecilia Bartoli, where Ms. Lewek “perform[ed] a miracle” (Neue Zürcher Zeitung) and thrilled audiences with “a rich (and richly differentiated) soprano voice [that] has not been experienced for a long time” (Salzburger Nachrichten). She returned this summer in Barrie Kosky’s new production of Orphée aux Enfers “ravishingly” (Bachtrack) singing the “the raunchy, full-throttle” (Financial Times) role of Eurydice, once again wowing critics and audiences alike for her versatility as a performer and prompting Opera Wire to exclaim her Artist of the Week and garnering a 5 page spread in Salzburg’s official festival magazine. Future seasons include multiple returns to The Metropolitan Opera, débuts with Teatro alla Scala, and Royal Opera House Covent Garden. Upcoming new roles include Juliette (Romeo et Juliette), Cleopatra in Handel’s Giulio Cesare, the title role in Massenet’s Manon, all three Heroines in Offenbach’s epic Les contes d’Hoffmann, and the triple crown roles of the Queens in Donizetti’s trilogy, Anna Bolena, Maria Stuarda, and Roberto Devereux. Ms. Lewek has appeared with Toledo Opera in Lucia di Lammermoor, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, and the Winter Gala.

Zach Borichevsky

Tenor Zach Borichevsky is known for his “beautiful timbre” and his creation of “intimate moments of beauty.” A series of significant débuts have established Mr. Borichevsky as one of the most exciting new vocal talents to emerge on the international stage, with celebrated performances such as Rodolfo (La Bohème) with Finnish National Opera, Romeo (Roméo et Juliette) for Teatro Municipal de Santiago in Chile, and Alfredo (La Traviata) for the Glyndebourne Festival. He has graced opera stages across the globe with recent performances as Edmondo (Manon Lescaut) in his Metropolitan Opera début, Anatol (Vanessa) for the Santa Fe Opera, Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly) for Teatro Municipal de Santiago in Chile, Rodolfo (La Bohème) with English National Opera, and Alfredo (La Traviata) with the Seattle Opera, to name a few. Recent performances for Mr. Borichevsky include Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus) with Palm Beach Opera, Narraboth (Salome) with Spoleto Festival, Alfredo (La Traviata) with Opera Grand Rapids, and Verdi’s Requiem with National Philharmonic. Additional performances include Lensky (Eugene Onegin), Rodolfo (La Bohème), and Romeo (Roméo et Juliette) all with Arizona Opera, Edgardo (Lucia di Lammermoor) with Opera Carolina, Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus) for Cincinnati Opera, and Tamino (The Magic Flute). Malcolm MacKenzie

With a voice described as having a “rich vocal range full of inviting nuance,” Malcolm MacKenzie is a veteran of the dramatic baritone repertoire. Opera News has praised him as a “confident, commanding Count di Luna…of robust tone, ardent address, arching phrases and genuine baritonal squillo.”  Mr. MacKenzie has been heard at leading opera houses throughout the U.S. and Europe, appearing at the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, Paris Opera (Bastille), Finland’s Savonlinna Festival, Washington National Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Glimmerglass Opera, San Diego Opera, Arizona Opera, Fort Worth Opera, and Pittsburgh Opera, in roles including Simon Boccanegra, Iago, Tonio, Baron Scarpia, Don Giovanni, Count di Luna, Renato, Jack Rance, Marcello, Germont, and Count Almaviva. Engagements for his 2021-22 season included Marquis de Posa (Don Carlos) at the Metropolitan Opera (cover Artist), the title role in Piedmont Opera's Gianni Schicchi, and creating the role of James Owen in the Spoleto Festival world premiere of Omar.  Recent engagements for Mr. MacKenzie have included Germont (La Traviata), Stubb (Moby-Dick), as well as role debuts as Rigoletto in the title role, Baron Scarpia (Tosca), and Don Alfonso (Così fan Tutte), Tonio (I Pagliacci), creating the role of Roger Chillingworth in Colorado Opera's world premiere of The Scarlet Letter by Lori Laitman, Enrico (Lucia di Lammermoor), the title role in Simon Boccanegra, Belcore (L’elisir d’amore), Iago (Otello), Count di Luna (Il Trovatore), and Jack Rance (La Fanciulla del West).

Jessica Dold

Soprano Jessica Dold returns to Toledo Opera after her triumphant portrayal of Mimi in La Bohème in 2020. Ms. Dold has performed throughout the country in roles such as Mimí (La Bohème), Alice Ford (Falstaff), Countess Almaviva (Le Nozze di Figaro), and First Lady (The Magic Flute). Ms. Dold has enjoyed debuts in recent years with Opera Grand Rapids, Michigan Opera Theater, Sarasota Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Arbor Opera Theater, Mercury Opera Rochester, and Blue Lake Opera. She has also cultivated an illustrious concert repertoire including Beethoven’s 9th Symphony and Mass in C, Mozart’s Mass in C minor and Requiem, Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass and Creation, Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem, and Mendelssohn’s Elijah with Michigan Sinfonietta, Holland Symphony, Detroit Medical Orchestra, Case Western Reserve University Symphony, Community Choir of Detroit, and Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Dold has taken part in several renowned young artist programs, including Santa Fe Opera, Sarasota Opera, and AIMS in Graz, Austria. Ms. Dold also appeared with Toledo Opera as the First Lady in The Magic Flute.

Katherine Kincaid

Katherine Kincaid is a mezzo-soprano from Jacksonville, Florida who recently graduated with a Master of Music in opera from the University of Maryland as a part of the Maryland Opera Studio, where she studied with Delores Ziegler. In 2019, Ms. Kincaid graduated from Florida State University with a Bachelor of Music in voice performance. She recently performed with the Maryland Opera Studio as Ramiro (La finta giardiniera). Her past roles include Dorabella (Così fan tutte), Orphée (Orphée e Euridice), and Mrs. Lowe (The Manchurian Candidate). Katherine has performed with the Seagle Music Colony, Oberlin in Italy, Classical Singing and New York in June, and CCM Opera Bootcamp. She is also a trained classical pianist and songwriter. This season with Toledo Opera, Ms. Kincaid will be singing Figara (The Stylist of Seville) for our Opera on Wheels production touring the region’s elementary schools.

Michael Colman

Lyric bass Michael Colman recently hailed by Opera News for “fielding a fine, dark bass-baritone,” has performed leading and supporting roles with many premier regional opera companies including The Commentator (Scalia/Ginsburg) with Opera Carolina, Opera Grand Rapids, Chautauqua Opera, Opera in the Rock and Toledo Opera (COVID cancellation), Basilio (Il Barbiere di Siviglia) with Chautauqua Opera and Virginia Opera, Guglielmo (Così Fan Tutte) with Opera Grand Rapids, Leporello (Don Giovanni) with the Janiec Opera Company, Sergeant of Police (The Pirates of Penzance) with Dayton Opera, Colline (La Bohème) with Indiana University, Figaro (Le Nozze di Figaro) with The University of Kansas, as well as concert performances as the Bass Soloist (Messiah) with the Dayton Philharmonic and the Bass Soloist (Mozart Requiem) with The Virginia Consort. A native of Adrian, Michigan, he earned degrees from Baylor University, The University of Kansas, and Indiana University studying with Peter Volpe. Mr. Colman is a past Resident Artist of Toledo Opera.

Jason Budd

Hailed as a “buffo with a legitimate voice,” Jason Budd has garnered a reputation for being a consummate singer-actor. Having received accolades for his performances across the United States and Europe, Mr. Budd recently made his South American debut with the title role in Verdi's Falstaff in São Paulo, Brazil. While studying at BGSU, he was a resident artist with Toledo Opera and has been a principal artist with the company several times. He has also had much success in vocal competitions over the years, including wins at the Opera Columbus Competition, the Heinz Rehfuss competition with Orlando Opera, the Mary Jacobs Smith Singer of the Year competition with Shreveport Opera, and the Meistersinger Competition in Graz, Austria, which was broadcast on Austrian television. Recent engagements include performances with the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC, Boston Midsummer Opera, Toledo Opera, Fremont Opera in California, Opera Project Columbus, and Cleveland Opera Theater. Mr. Budd last appeared with Toledo Opera in Vanessa.

Fran Daniel Laucerica, Gastone, Visconte di Letorières

Praised for his clarity and agility, Cuban-American tenor, Fran Daniel Laucerica, is a versatile musician who shines equally in operatic and concert repertoire. Mr. Laucerica will be a Glimmerglass Festival Young Artist for the summer of 2022, where he’s set to perform the role of Dante in the premiere of Tenor Overboard and cover the tenor roles in Taking Up Serpents and the premiere of Holy Ground. As a Resident Artist with Toledo Opera, he has performed as Count Almaviva in a touring production of The Barber of Seville and Ferrando in a Resident Artist production of Cosí fan tutte. Additionally, as a Wolf Trap Opera Studio Artist for the 2020 and 2021 seasons, Laucerica performed scenes from Billy Budd and Fellow Travelers, and covered the roles of Adolfo Pirelli (Sweeney Todd), Comte Barigoule (Cendrillon) and Satyavan (Savitri). Mr. Laucerica’s other recent operatic performance credits include Ernesto (Don Pasquale), The Magician (The Consul), The Vain Man/The Snake (The Little Prince), Reverend Samuel Parris (The Crucible), Tamino (Die Zauberflöte) and Albert (Albert Herring). In concert, Mr. Laucerica has performed as a Tenor Soloist in Carmina Burana, Henry VIII, Mozart’s Coronation Mass, Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, and Messiah. Laucerica is a recent Florida-District Encouragement Award Winner in the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition, as well as a semi-finalist in the SAS Performing Arts, Camerata Bardi and Music International Grand Prix competitions. He graduated from the Boston Conservatory with a master’s in opera performance and a bachelor’s from Northwestern University.

Andrew Payne

Baritone Andrew Payne hails from Waynesboro, Pennsylvania and is a student of Jennifer Rowley. Previously, he has studied with W. Stephen Smith at Northwestern University where he received his M.M. in voice and opera, and with Marcus DeLoach, where he graduated from Temple University with a B.M. in voice performance. Past operatic roles have been Howard (Dog Days), Sam (Trouble in Tahiti), Guglielmo (Così Fan Tutte), Benoît/Alcindoro (La bohème), Johann and the Albert understudy (Werther), Nick Shadow (The Rake’s Progress), Frank (Die Fledermaus), Claudio (Béatrice et Bénédict) and the Gendarme (Les Mamelles de Tirésias). Mr. Payne has also been the baritone soloist in Stacey Garrop’s oratorio, Terra Nostra and has also performed internationally in a world premiere production of The Mad Hatter in the West End district of London. This summer, he will be making a guest appearance performing in the Savannah Voice Festival. Mr. Payne has recently won first place in Opera Idol hosted by Sherrill Milnes, third place in the NATS Philadelphia Chapter in 2015, and was a recipient of the Middleburg Music Scholarship in 2017. He has performed in masterclasses with Sherrill Milnes, Jennifer Rowley, Warren Jones, Anthony Michaels-Moore, and Brenton Ryan. Mr. Payne is once again extremely excited and honored to continue another season as a Resident Artist with Toledo Opera.

Joseph Colaneri

Renowned for his versatility, musical depth, and ability to “inspire musicians,” Joseph Colaneri is recognized as a multifaceted presence on the podium. An international conductor equally adept with operatic, oratorio, and symphonic repertoire, Colaneri continues to expand his relationships with orchestras and opera companies both nationally and abroad. Music Director of the acclaimed Glimmerglass Festival since 2013, Mo. Colaneri has led a diverse range of repertoire there including Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen, Donizetti’s L’assedio di Calais, Bernstein’s Candide, and John Corigliano’s The Ghosts of Versailles with classics La traviata, La bohème, and Il barbiere di Siviglia. In the 2019-2020 season, Maestro Colaneri made debuts at San Diego Opera with Verdi’s Aïda and l’Opéra Royale de Versailles leading John Corigliano’s The Ghosts of Versailles. The special 2020 virtual season at The Glimmerglass Festival saw him as presenter of a series of master classes for their Young Artists program, music director for an animated version of Wagner’s Die Feen and lecturer for a six-part YouTube series, Keeping Time with Colaneri focused on the history and understanding of opera. This season, he returns to The Glimmerglass Festival to lead Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, Il trovatore, and Gods and Mortals. He has been a frequent guest at the Metropolitan Opera since 1998 where he recently led Boïto’s Mefistofele and Bellini’s Norma. In addition he has conducted performances of La bohème (company debut, 2000), Luisa Miller, Turandot with Andrea Gruber and Rigoletto in the popular Metropolitan Opera Parks performances, L’italiana in Algeri with Olga Borodina, Nabucco featuring Maria Guleghina at Lincoln Center, Falstaff with Bryn Terfel in the title role, Il trittico, La fille du régiment with Natalie Dessay and Juan Diego Flórez, and Mary Zimmerman’s new production of Lucia di Lammermoor, also with Natalie Dessay in the title role. During the 2009-2010 season, he replaced James Levine for the Metropolitan’s new Luc Bondy production of Tosca, including the worldwide HD transmission and DVD for EMI. During the 2011-2012, season he led performances of Don Pasquale.

Marc Verzatt

Marc Verzatt began his professional career as a dancer with the Metropolitan Opera’s ballet ensemble. After several seasons, he started work in stage management and worked with the Pittsburgh Ballet, Pittsburgh Opera, and Cincinnati Opera, before becoming stage manager and assistant stage director at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. In Germany, he worked as stage manager and assistant stage director with the theater in Aachen, company manager of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Starlight Express. Returning to the USA, he was both stage director and acting coach to the Chicago Lyric Opera’s young artist program. He has staged productions for the Houston Grand Opera, Florida Grand Opera, the Téatro Colón in Argentina, and to numerous opera companies throughout the country. Recent productions have included a program for the National Gallery in Washington DC. His acting career has expanded recently with film and stage roles, and an Off Broadway debut in June 2021 in Lilies, to be followed by a principal lead in One Empire, Under God.  He was awarded Stage Director of the Year by Classical Singer Magazine. Mr. Verzatt most recently directed Turandot for Toledo Opera.
