Just in time for Valentine’s Day! The Merry Widow dances into our hearts with its beautiful melodies and witty storyline. Hanna Glawari is a vastly wealthy young widow from the small and poverty-stricken Balkan province of Pontevedro. Ambassador Baron Zeta is anxious that when Hanna re-marries, it is to a Pontevedrian and not a Frenchman, to keep her money in the country and save them all from ruin. J. Ernest Green conducts this bubbly delight while Jamie Offenbach and James M. Norman bring the light-hearted comedy to life. Starring as the merry widow is Alyson Cambridge (Toledo Opera’s Carmen) and BGSU voice professor Keith Phares as Count Danilo.

Alyson Cambridge

American soprano Alyson Cambridge is one of the most diverse and compelling vocal artists on the scene today. She is praised for her “powerful, clear voice” by The New York Times, hailed by critics for her “radiant, vocally assured, dramatically subtle and artistically imaginative” performances (Washington Post), and celebrated for her “sultry and seductive readings” (Opera News). Combined with a striking stage presence and affecting musical and dramatic interpretation, she has nearly two decades of success on the world’s leading opera and concert stages, including The Metropolitan Opera, Carnegie Hall, Washington National Opera at The Kennedy Center, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Los Angeles Opera, London’s Royal Albert Hall, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Vienna Konzerthaus, and New York's Broadway Theatre, to name a few. Last season, Ms. Cambridge was a major feature at the 2022 Glimmerglass Festival, where she assumed the title role in The Passion of Mary Cardwell Dawson for its indoor premiere as well as performed Elsa (The Sound of Music) and Ann in the world premiere of Damien Geter’s and Lila Palmer’s Holy Ground. In the same season, Ms. Cambridge took on the role of Coretta Scott King (I Dream) with both Opera Carolina and Charlottesville Opera, and outside of the opera world, she was featured in the season premiere of the reboot of the 21st season of NBC's Law and Order, appearing alongside Norm Lewis.  Prior to this, she sang Gala Concerts for Toledo Opera, Levine Music, Glimmerglass Opera, and the National Opera Chorus at Carnegie Hall. This season’s engagements include the title role of Tosca with Opera Carolina, leading as Hannah in The Merry Widow with Toledo Opera, and reprising Elsa in The Sound of Music with Arizona Opera. She will also perform in recital for Holy City Arts & Lyric Opera.

Keith Phares

For over 20 years, in repertoire from Baroque through present day, Keith Phares has appeared in leading roles with Washington National Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Seattle Opera, the New York City Opera, Metropolitan Opera, New York Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, São Paolo Symphony Orchestra, Santa Fe Opera, Glimmerglass Opera, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis and elsewhere; in collaboration with Hal Prince, Francesca Zambello, Frank Corsaro, Richard Hickox, Marin Alsop, Sir Colin Davis, Sir Thomas Allen, among others; and in recital with the Marilyn Horne Foundation, The American Modern Ensemble, WordSong, Illuminarts, LyricFest and Brooklyn Art Song Society. Recent highlights include Ty in the premiere of Kuster’s and Campbell’s A Thousand Acres with Des Moines Metro Opera marking the company’s 50th Anniversary season, Fredrik Egerman opposite Patricia Racette in Arizona Opera’s A Little Night Music, Robert Cohen’s Alzheimer’s Stories at Carnegie Hall, the premiere of Herschel Garfein’s King of the River with the American Modern Ensemble, and Daddy Lowell/Mr. Floyd in Borzoni’s and de los Santos’s The Copper Queen film (premiere) with Arizona Opera.  His upcoming engagements include performances with Mostly Modern Projects, UrbanArias, and Charlottesville Opera. An ardent exponent of contemporary American opera, Mr. Phares sang Kynaston on the Grammy-nominated recording of Carlisle Floyd’s Prince of Players, Charlie in the premiere and recording of Heggie's and Scheer’s​ Three Decembers with Houston Grand Opera and San Francisco Opera, the Father in the premiere and recording of Spears’s and Walat’s ​Paul's Case​, Dr. Ludwig Binswanger in the premiere of Ricky Ian Gordon's ​Ellen West​, Hurstwood in the premiere of Aldridge's and Garfein’s Sister Carrie and the title role in the premiere and live, Grammy-winning recording of Aldridge's and Garfein’s  ​Elmer Gantry. Caroline Miller

aroline Miller is a “warm soprano [with] emotional bite,” praised as a compelling singer-actor with vocal flexibility and dramatic intensity, who is “especially adept at comedy.” Ms. Miller is currently a headliner guest soprano on Princess Cruises where she performs in their highly acclaimed production show Bravo as the opera diva and also presents her two solo shows backed by a full band, Judy, Julie and Me and Divas. Based in NYC, Ms. Miller is much sought out as a singer of new music with companies like Fresh Squeezed Opera and Encompass New Opera, as well as standard rep with companies like Bronx Opera and Opera Company of Brooklyn. She has performed across the country as a soloist and choral singer with companies that include InSeries, Bard Summerscape, and Ohio Light Opera. Ms. Miller is excited to return to Toledo Opera after performing as a Resident Artist in 2019-2020, appearing as Gretel in Hansel and Gretel vs the Witch and the Plaintiff in Gilbert and Sullivan's Trial by Jury (canceled due to COVID-19). Most recently, She made her Japanese debut as a concert soloist in Tokyo. The concert was the second in a series of friendship concerts between the US, Japan, and Taiwan organized by Japanese composer, Dainichi Rintaro. Ms. Miller has a BA in English Literature and Music from Washington University in St. Louis and an MM in Vocal Performance & Literature from Eastman School of Music. She resides in Harlem, NYC, with her bluegrass-playing husband and her un-impressed pitbull, Maya.

Drake Dantzler

Drake Dantzler is a frequent performer of opera, oratorio, and song. Mr. Dantzler was hailed in Opera News as “a real find: he has a voice of molten silver, immaculate musicianship and an expressive stage persona.” Mr. Dantzler has recently appeared as Nanki-Poo in The Mikado with Opera Grand Rapids and Union Avenue Opera in St. Louis, where he was praised for his “dashing and earnest” performance and his “soaring high notes.” Mr. Dantzler has also been seen with the Opera Theater of the Rockies as Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus) and as Gérard (Lakmé) and with Arbor Opera Theater as Rodolfo (La bohème) and Alfredo (La Traviata), where Encore Michigan lauded “Drake Dantzler's tenor vocals were marvelous, bright and evocative." Other opera credits include Rodolfo, as well as Almaviva (Il barbiere di Siviglia with the Live@First concert series, leading roles with the Ohio Light Opera in Kismet, The Count of Luxembourg, The Pirates of Penzance, The Mikado, and the Duke of Dunstable in Patience, which was recorded and released on Albany Records. Mr. Dantzler has also appeared with Central City Opera, Sarasota Opera, the Breckenridge Music Festival, Des Moines Metro, Opera Iowa, and The Austin Lyric Opera among others. Mr. Dantzler is an associate professor at Oakland University, where he directs the opera program. Mr. Dantzler has been a guest artist and teacher at the Interlochen Summer Arts Camp, the Vancouver International Song Institute, and the Toledo Opera Summer Camp.

Jason Budd

Hailed as a “buffo with a legitimate voice,” Jason Budd has garnered a reputation for being a consummate singer-actor. Having received accolades for his performances across the United States and Europe, Mr. Budd recently made his South American debut with the title role in Verdi's Falstaff in São Paulo, Brazil. While studying at BGSU, he was a resident artist with Toledo Opera and has been a principal artist with the company several times. He has also had much success in vocal competitions over the years, including wins at the Opera Columbus Competition, the Heinz Rehfuss competition with Orlando Opera, the Mary Jacobs Smith Singer of the Year competition with Shreveport Opera, and the Meistersinger Competition in Graz, Austria, which was broadcast on Austrian television. Recent engagements include performances with the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC, Boston Midsummer Opera, Toledo Opera, Fremont Opera in California, Opera Project Columbus, and Cleveland Opera Theater. Mr. Budd last appeared with Toledo Opera in Vanessa.

Justin Bays

Justin Scott Bays is a native of Ohio and with recent roles including: Enrico (Il Campanello) with Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp; Demetrius (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) with The University of Toledo; Papageno (Die Zauberflöte) with Toledo Opera on Wheels; Fiorello (Il Barbiere di Siviglia) with Toledo Opera, Marullo (Rigoletto) with West Bay Opera; Masetto (Don Giovanni) with The San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM); Sid (Albert Herring), Bill Sauer (Money Tree), Boy 2 in (Trouble in Tahiti), Masetto (Don Giovanni) with Waffle Opera, and Pritschitsch (The Merry Widow). Mr. Bays has extensive training in musical theater with roles including: Emcee (Cabaret), Nicely Nicely Johnson (Guys and Dolls), Malcolm (The Full Monty), Hucklebee (The Fantasticks), Gordon (A New Brain), and Guido (Nine). Mr. Bays has also performed on national tours, as well as an international tour to New Zealand as a featured soloist. He has performed in China with the iSING International Young Artist Program where he performed with the Shanghai Symphony and the Shanghai Philharmonic. Mr. Bays was a Resident Artist for Toledo Opera in 2016-17 and has performed in many Toledo Opera productions.

Brendan Boyle

Hailing from Topeka, Kansas, tenor Brendan Boyle has been praised for a heroic sound and imposing stage presence. Having developed a strong reputation across central Texas for his passionate work in vocal education, Mr. Boyle has since begun to appear on large performing stages across the country. He has most recently been seen performing Rodolfo (La bohème) under the baton of Arthur Fagen and has privately workshopped some of opera’s most well-known roles with legendary soprano Carol Vaness. Mr. Boyle also boasts an extensive list of operatic roles across Texas venues on stages such as the Austin Opera House, the Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts Center, and Waco Hall. Equally comfortable across musical genres, he has been seen in works spanning the artistic spectrum, in roles such as Sir Joseph Porter (H.M.S Pinafore), the title role in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, and covering the role of the Duke of Mantua (Rigoletto). A student of world-renowned bass Peter Volpe and an enthusiastic trainee at an internationally acclaimed powerlifting gym, Mr. Boyle brings a striking combination of a rich, dramatic tenor sound and a heroic physicality to the operatic stage.

Matthew Payne

Featured, both as an educator and singer by The Today Show and Boston Globe, Matthew Payne recently received his Master’s degree from the University of Maryland as a part of their prestigious Maryland Opera Studio. He has also received Bachelors degrees in vocal performance and in biology from Oberlin Conservatory and College. During the 2022/23 season Mr. Payne serves as Toledo Opera’s baritone resident artist and currently portrays the Pirate King in their outreach production of The Pirates of Penzance and will be singing in their Celebrazione del Coro. During the 2021/22 season he portrayed Papageno (Die Zauberflöte) (Maryland Opera Studio), premiered the role of Aaron in Nailah Nombeko’s new opera Sunder (Annapolis Opera and Maryland Opera Studio), and portrayed Joe Harland in John Musto’s Later the Same Evening (Maryland Opera Studio). Mr. Payne has previously been a young artist with Central City Opera (2021), baritone fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center (2019), an artist at the Chautauqua Opera Company and Conservatory (2018), and a young artist with Opera Neo (2016 and 2017). His previous roles include: Billy Bigelow (Carousel), Marullo (Rigoletto), Mr. Gobineau (The Medium), and Massetto (Don Giovanni). As a soloist, Mr. Payne has performed in concerts with the French Embassy, Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, the Washington Opera Society, Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra, the Oberlin Conservatory Orchestra, the Society for New Music, and the Oberlin Baroque Ensemble.

Nicholas Kottman

Tenor Nicholas Kottman is an Ohio Native originally from the village of Bellbrook, Ohio. He has been praised for his vibrant, lyric tenor sound. He holds a Bachelor of Music in choral music education and his Master of Vocal Performance degree specializing in vocal pedagogy and vocal science both from Bowling Green State University. When not performing, Mr. Kottman works as a corrections officer at Toledo Correctional Institution. He has been a member of the Toledo Opera chorus since 2019 having performed in Macbeth, La Bohème, La Traviata, Il Trovatore, and Cavalleria Rusticana. Mr. Kottman has performed the roles of Orpheus (Orpheus in the Underworld), Father in the world premiere of Nuclear, Don Alfonso (Cosi Fan Tutti), Tony Esposito (The Most Happy Fella), and Carl Olsen (Street Scene). He has also sung several recitals throughout the greater Toledo area. Notably, Mr. Kottman has won first place in the undergraduate division of the Dr. Marjorie Conrad art song competition at Bowling Green State University along with collaborative pianist Emily Morin. He studied under baritone Lance Ashmore and baritone Keith Phares during his university studies and has since studied with tenor Shawn Mathey and soprano Sujin Lee.

Seth Johnson

Seth Johnson is a tenor with a passion for both opera and education. Originally from Illinois, he is a graduate of Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, with a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance. During his time in Peoria, his interest in opera was piqued through his work with arts organizations such as Opera Illinois and Bradley Opera Youth Outreach. Shortly after graduating, Mr. Johnson moved from Illinois to Ohio where he began the work of breaking into the local arts scene. Since then, he has worked with many local arts organizations in several capacities, including as a performer in various roles with Toledo Opera and Detroit Opera, performer for Toledo Symphony Orchestra, both house manager and resident artist at Ohio Light Opera, and education administrator at Great Lakes Light Opera. Throughout his time on the stage, Mr. Johnson has performed such roles as Nemorino (L’elisir d’amore, L’amante (Amelia al ballo), Archibald Grosvenor (Patience), and Vanderdendur (Candide). Most recently, he completed his Master’s in Vocal Performance at the University of Toledo. When he is not performing, Mr. Johnson can be found teaching an array of classes at Owens Community College in Perrysburg, including voice lessons, piano lessons, class piano, music theory, aural skills, and music business as well as managing his private voice and piano studio.

Ian Pathak

Ian Pathak, an Indian/American tenor and a native to the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area makes his Toledo Opera debut, performing the role of Bogdonavitch in The Merry Widow. This year, he made his University of Michigan Opera Theatre mainstage role debut as the Schoolmaster/Mosquito in Leoš Janáček’s opera, The Cunning Little Vixen, directed by Tara Faircloth and conducted by Kirk Severtson. In December 2022, Mr. Pathak performed at Detroit Opera in the chorus of Aida (in concert) alongside renowned singers Cristine Goerke and Angel Blue. To round out the 2022-2023 season, he will be attending the Lehrer Vocal Institute at the Music Academy of The West as a studio artist. This past summer, Mr. Pathak attended the nine week Opera Theatre and Vocal Arts Program at the Aspen Music Festival. Mainstage performances included Verdi’s Falstaff and Mozart’s Don Giovanni. He also performed in two opera scenes including the role of Nadir (Les Pecheurs des Perles) and as Lurcanio (Ariodante). His awards and honors include: 1st place in the National Society of Arts and Letters (D. C. Chapter), 2nd Place in the Southern Illinois Young Artist competition, a Directors Award in the James Tolland Vocal Arts Competition, and Finalist Awards in the Undergraduate Schmidt Vocal Competition, American Pops NextGen National Competition, and the Classical Singer Competition.

Imara Miles

Recently named the 2022 winner of the Elizabeth Greenfield award, Imara-Miles (She/They), mezzo-soprano, is known for her expressivity and lush sound. Holding degrees from both York College of Pennsylvania (B.A) and Indiana University (M.M), Ms. Miles has been a lead and featured performer in shows such as The Pirates of Penzance (Ruth), The Drowsy Chaperone (Title Character), Dialogues Des Carmélites (Mere Jeanne), and Little Women (Cecelia March). While at Indiana University, she also performed in Carol Vaness’ Opera Workshop productions of Gianni Schicchi and The Ballad of Baby Doe where she played Zita and Augusta Tabor, respectively. They have also been a young artist at summer programs such as The Grant Park festival, The Glimmerglass Festival, Finger Lakes Opera, and Des Moines Metro Opera. During these programs, she performed various partial roles as Carmen & Merecédès (Carmen), Giovanna Seymour (Anna Bolena), and Amneris (Aïda) as well as a featured performer as Lily/Maria(cover) in Porgy & Bess with Des Moines Metro Opera. During the 2021-2022 season, Ms. Miles was a Resident Artist with Pensacola Opera where she performed in their productions of Die Zauberflöte (Third Lady) and Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Berta/Rosina cover). She also performed the role of Elizabeth in Matthew Aucoin’s Second Nature with Opera Fayetteville and was a featured Soloist with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra. Currently, Ms. Miles is a Resident Artist at Toledo Opera where she recently performed La Badessa/Lola in their double bill, Suor Angelica/Cavalleria Rusticana, and The Merry Widow as Olga. In the upcoming 22-23 season, they will return to Pensacola Opera as Nettie Fowler in Carousel and will be making her role and house debut as Marcellina in Le Nozze di Figaro with Knoxville Opera.

Sara Mortensen

Noted for her shimmering, soaring voice, soprano Sara Mortensen is a proud Michigan native. She earned her bachelor’s degree in music from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee where she was a vocal scholarship recipient. In the May of 2022, Ms. Mortensen received her master’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music. During her time at the Manhattan School she had the privilege to perform the title role in Massenet’s Cendrillon in MSM’s opera outreach, scenes from Idomeneo (Ilia), The Crucible (Ann Putnam), as well as preparing the role of Cupid in Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld, scenes from A Quiet Place (Dede), and Falstaff (Nannetta). Ms. Mortensen has also performed abroad in both Italy and France including scenes from La bohème (Musetta), Le Villi (Anna) at Opera Viva!, Faust (Marguerite), Les Contes D’Hoffmann (Antonia) and Cendrillon (Cendrillon) at Classic Lyric Arts. Other previous credits include Lucinda (Dark Sisters) and Solo Nina (Ainadamar) at The Miami Music Festival.

Elizabeth Rothrock

A member of the Toledo Opera Chorus since 2015, Elizabeth “Betsy” Rothrock, is a versatile performer in opera, operetta, and musical theatre. Her favorite roles include Papagena (The Magic Flute), Yum-Yum (The Mikado), and the original Maggie in the world premiere of Father Bingo at Detroit’s Music Hall.  Performing theatre for young audiences, Ms. Rothrock toured regionally with the outreach programs of Michigan Opera Theatre (Detroit Opera), and nationally with Brainstormers! of Royal Oak, and The Detroit Institute of Arts’ Prince St. Players.  Her appearances with area symphony orchestras include the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and the Rochester, Birmingham-Bloomfield, Dearborn, Warren, Grosse Pointe, and Toledo Symphonies.  Ms. Rothrock is a member of the choir at Mariners’ church of Detroit.

J. Ernest Green

J. Ernest Green is the Artistic Director of Live Arts Maryland and the Music Director of the Annapolis Chamber Orchestra and Annapolis Chorale. He served as a Cover Conductor with the National Symphony Orchestra, where he worked with Denyce Graves, Sir James Galway, Pinchas Zuckerman, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, Osmo Vanska, among others. As a Pops Conductor, he conducted for the late Marvin Hamlisch, where he worked with artists such as: Idina Menzel, Robert Klein and Lucie Arnaz, Maria Friedman, Brian D’Arcy James and Klea Blackhurst, Mike Nichols, Liza Minnelli, Aretha Franklin, Chris Botti, Kevin Cole, Maria Friedman, Lang Lang, and Barbra Streisand. Mr. Green is the conductor for “Late Night” Music Director Paul Shaffer and Valerie Simpson for his symphony show, appearing with the Vancouver Symphony, Winnipeg Symphony, Kalamazoo Symphony, and the Long Beach Symphony. Mr. Green has appeared with many orchestras including: The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, The Philadelphia Orchestra, The National Symphony Orchestra, The Florida Orchestra, The Tuscia Festival Orchestra (Italy), Annapolis Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Lincoln Symphony, Orquestra Sinfonica Nacional (Santo Domingo), and the Trinity Chamber Orchestra. J. Ernest Green is a graduate of the University of Toledo and the Peabody Conservatory of Music where he studied with Frederik Prausnitz. An avid advocate for the arts, he has served as a music panelist for the Maryland State Arts Council and an advisor on its Strategic Planning Committee.

Jamie Offenbach

American Stage Director and Producer, Jamie Offenbach, has had a  career spanning over four decades as a guest artist with companies including Los Angeles Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Opera Quebec, Baltimore Opera, Austin Lyric, Nashville Opera, Kentucky Opera, Hawai'i Opera Theatre, Michigan Opera, San Diego Opera, Opera Carolina, Opera Pacific, Florentine Opera, Dallas Opera, Colorado Opera, Pittsburgh Opera, Toledo Opera, Santa Barbara Opera, Annapolis Opera, Savonlinna Opera, St. Barts Music Festival among others. He can be heard on the 2012 Double Grammy Awarded Naxos label recording of Aldridge's Elmer Gantry, and Angel Record's recording of Gershwin's Blue Monday. A native of Honolulu, Hawai'i, Mr. Offenbach also currently serves as the Director of Artistic Programming with the Hawai'i Opera Theatre (HOT). He created, produced and directed HOT's 20-21 Digital Season and is also the creator and Artistic Director of STUDIO101, HOT's newest performance space which serves as an incubator for creative projects. Mr. Offenbach last appeared in Toledo Opera's 2015 production of Faust as Mephistopheles. The Merry Widow marks his directorial debut with the company.

James. M. Norman

James Norman has been active in the Northwest Ohio arts community for many years.  In his 30+ years in the business, Mr. Norman has directed, costumed, and stage-managed plays, musicals, and operas. For the Opera On Wheels education program of Toledo Opera, he has designed and directed The Pirates of Penzance, Cinderella, The Stylist of Seville, Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel vs. the Witch, Romeo and Juliet, Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?, The Magic Flute, and The Billy Goats Gruff. Favorite musical theatre pieces he has directed include: The Full Monty, Victor/Victoria, South Pacific, My Fair Lady, All Shook Up, and Evil Dead: The Musical.  Mr. Norman is an accomplished singer and actor as well having sung comprimario roles and in the chorus for Toledo Opera for many years. He has sung with Renee Fleming, Robert Merrill, Lili Chookasian, Irina Mishura, Diana Soviero, and many more. He serves as Co-Artistic Director and Director of Production for the Toledo Opera. Additionally, Mr. Norman has taught part-time in the English department at the University of Toledo since 1992 and is a former president of the Ballet Theatre of Toledo board.

Domonique Glover

Domonique Glover began his dance career as a senior at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia while studying mathematics. He took classes in ballet, modern, and contemporary and was a member of the Spelman Dance Theater student company. He received his Bachelor of Science in math and moved back to Toledo where he continued studying dance locally. Since 2009, Mr. Glover has choreographed several local performances throughout northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan. Among these include Hairspray, Heathers: The Musical, and West Side Story with the Toledo Repertoire teen productions; Ragtime, Violet: The Musical, and Joseph ATATDC produced at The Croswell Opera House in Adrian, Michigan. Mr. Glover made his Toledo Opera debut in the 2018 production of I Dream as a feature dancer. He has performed on various stages, including The Valentine Theater, The Stranahan Theater, The Toledo Repertoire, The Ohio Theater, The Maumee Indoor Theater, The Croswell in Adrian, Michigan, The Fillmore in Detroit, Michigan, The Breen Center in Cleveland, Ohio, and The Knight Theater in Charlotte, North Carolina. He currently performs with and teaches multiple levels of contemporary and ballet with T.H.E. Modern Dance Company - Toledo’s Human Experience. Mr. Glover is blessed to be working with Toledo Opera in this capacity and looks forward to more endeavors.
